Hilario Vasquez Galvez was born January 14, 1950, in Havana, Cuba to Brigido and Pastora Vasquez Galvez. He was one of twenty-one children. He was educated in Cuba and obligated to serve in Castro’s army. He came to America in 1980 and worked at Simmons Poultry Plant for a number of years until he injured his back. Hilario loved to sing and dance. He said he learned English by listening to music. He was always working; climbing trees to cut branches with his machete; repairing all kinds of appliances; anything that could be repaired, he did.
Hilario married his wife, Charlotte, November 8, 2000. He was a loving husband and caring stepfather to Charlotte’s daughter, Charonda. He was called “Larry” because people couldn’t pronounce his name; he was also called “the crazy Cuban” because of his aggressive behavior. Hilario was not afraid of anyone or anything. However, there was another side to Hilario, “a loving side.” When Charlotte worked for the Children’s Emergency Shelter, Hilario would come talk to the children, giving them advice in his Spanish/English dialect. The children listened to him because he talked to them from his heart.
It was nothing for Hilario to come and check on Charlotte during bad storms and tornado weather. She’d have the children in the storm shelter and would hear knocking on the door; it was Hilario checking on her. He was always helping the
children or someone in the family; the time of day didn’t matter. Hilario’s niece Pastora arranged video chats with his daughter, Maria, who he had not seen since she was 10 years old. His last words to Charlotte, while he could still talk, was “I love you.”
He was preceded in death by his father and mother; his sister Tomasa Galvez; brother Barbaro Galvez; and stepdaughter Christina Price.
Hilario leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Charlotte of the home; daughter Maria Regla Galvez Herrera,
granddaughter Alicia Herrera, and grandson Reinier Herrera all from Cuba. His brother Alexandro Vasquez Galvez of Fort Smith, Arkansas; niece Pastora Galvez of Texas; stepdaughter Charonda (Robert) Jefferson of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; step grandsons Dale (Monica) Jefferson of Florida; Bradley Jefferson of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; and Brendan Price of Fort Smith, Arkansas; a nephew Barbaro (Felicia)Dumas of Fort Smith, Arkansas, and eighteen (18) other siblings all of Cuba. He also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Celebration of life service will be held Tuesday January 7, 2025; 11:30 AM Rowell-Parish Mortuary Chapel 611 North 9th St., Fort Smith, Arkansas 72901.
Burial and final resting place: Fort Smith National Cemetery 522 Garland Ave., Fort Smith, Arkansas 72901.
