Leo Good, born Saturday, January 23, 1943, to Lornia (“Lonnie”) Good and Pearlie Irene Holmes in Morrilton, Arkansas, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, November 25, 2020.
Leo spent his life in Fort Smith, Arkansas, where he grew up in the beloved Elm Grove community and attended all-Black Lincoln High School. He excelled in sports, and played basketball, baseball, and his favorite, football.
In August 1961, Leo joined the United States Navy. He served his country aboard the USS Turner-DDR 834, and was honorably discharged on July 31, 1963.
Leo married the love of his life; Joan Bernadette Johnson, on January 9, 1964. They celebrated 45 years of marriage before her passing in 2008. From that union, three precious children were born; Andre′, Gregory, and Samantha.
He spent most of his working life, 38 years, at Dixie Cup, where he made history as the first African American supervisor at the Fort Smith facility. He retired to devote more time to his family and community.
Leo was a faithful and active member of Grace Church in Alma, Arkansas. He served as the chair of the Legal Redress Committee of the Fort Smith Chapter of the NAACP under the leadership of President Jerry Jennings. His many other community engagements included membership in the Progressive Men’s Club, the Young Men’s Association (“YMA”), and the Lincoln High School Alumni Association.
He was passionate about his sports, with a special fondness for the Dallas Cowboys. On any given Sunday, anyone—yes, anyone—could (and would) just drop by and catch the hottest game on his big screen television and shoot the breeze about sports or politics or music or whatever popped up in conversation.
Leo was also an avid, skilled mechanic. He loved old cars.
Leo loved his family and friends immeasurably. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan; mother, Pearlie Holmes; father, Lornia Good; and brother, Marvin Hardin.
He leaves to cherish his memory: three sons, Carlas Good (Brandi) of Barling, Arkansas; Andre′ Good (Sharon) and Greg Good, both of Fort Smith, Arkansas; two daughters, Tracey Stewart of Lancaster, Texas, and Samantha Good of Alma, Arkansas; a brother, James Hardin of Van Buren, Arkansas; a sister, Ruby Pearline Holmes of Richmond, California; two brothers-in-law, Frank Johnson III of Fort Smith, Arkansas and Hannibal B. Johnson of Tulsa, Oklahoma; a sister-in-law, Barbara Hardin (Marvin) of Fort Smith; thirteen grandchildren, Kisha, Hubert, DiAndre’, Shay, Tre’von, DuShaun, Champaign, Cha′le′, Neil Jr., Arianna, Darrion, Kya, Zoe; five great-grandchildren, Kennedy, Berkley, Paige-Lei, Kay-Lei, Ry-Lei and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Dad never met a stranger and rarely lost a friend. He welcomed everyone with love. Dad fought the GOOD fight so rest well, in Love and Peace thy GOOD and faithful servant. You and your legacy remain in each of us.
