Carol Marie Carraway was born on February 23, 1936 in Los Angeles, California to Bill and Louise Johnson. She grew up in Southern California with her parents and two younger siblings. Carol was raised in a Christian home. She married the late Joe Yslas, Jr., in 1955 and they raised four children. Joe was in the US Air Force and the family settled in Sacramento, California. Carol and Joe divorced in 1974 and Carol continued to raise her two youngest children as a single mom. She shared her faith in God with her children.
Carol later met the late Harlan Carraway and they married in 1979. Harlan was in the US Coast Guard and was transferred from Sacramento to Washington, DC in 1983. They settled in nearby Springfield, Virginia. Harlan died suddenly in 1989 and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Carol said the ten years she spent with Harlan were the happiest of her life. After Harlan’s passing, Carol decided to move to Greenbrier, Arkansas in 1991 to be closer to her sister Jeanne Foggo. Sadly, Carol began to develop dementia and that would later turn into Alzheimer’s disease. While Alzheimer’s took her mind, it was never able to take her smile or the beautiful spirit that continued to shine so brightly.
Carol leaves behind to cherish her loving memory, four loving children, Debbie Yslas (Ric) of Sacramento, CA. , Darb Yslas of Eugene, OR., Tami (Dan) Henderson of Greenbrier, AR., Tony (Chita) Yslas of Centreville, VA.; two siblings, Jeanne Foggo of Greenbrier, AR. and David Johnson of Arizona; eight grandchildren, David, Jennifer, Justin, Jordan, Michael, Krystle, Nicolas, and Olivia; five great-grandchildren, Faith, Ayden, Austin, Keyton, Kyleigh and a host of other relatives and friends.
She also leaves behind a legacy of love and many lives made better for anyone that knew or met her. Her beautiful smile will certainly stay with them. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org).
A Celebration of Life ceremony will be held, Wednesday, March 15, 2017, 2:00pm at Greenbrier First United Methodist Church, 2 Tyler St. Greenbrier, Arkansas 72058 with a visitation held prior to the service.
